Safeguarding and Protecting Children – Advanced

This course is designed to give learners who work with children in either paid or voluntary capacity, a much more in depth awareness and understanding of safeguarding & protecting children, child vulnerability and significant harm. It enables individuals to recognise, identify and manage the behaviours/physical indicators that may be present in children who have or who are suffering abuse. The legislation that underpins child protection is briefly explored.

A practical approach is taken to identify responsibilities in handling the disclosure, recording and reporting of abuse by children. Many practical examples are provided to help adults caring for children to handle and manage the difficult situation of disclosure with encouragement to develop personal checklists for these situations.

Aim

To raise the awareness of professionals in relation to dealing with issues of child abuse at an advanced level. Recognise the signs/indicators and how to deal with incidents disclosed in relation to child abuse in line with the law, policies and procedures.

Objectives

  • Revisit learners knowledge and understanding of child abuse.

  • Identify children/young people who are vulnerable and at risk.

  • Explore the behavioural signs and indicators of abuse including;

* Exploitation

* On line bullying and harassment (sexting & cyberbullying)

* Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

* Honour Based Violence

* Forced Marriage

  • Explore the legislation that underpins safeguarding/child protection.

  • Describe why children rarely disclose abuse including child sexual abuse accommodation syndrome.

  • Identify who abuse children and why they abuse.

  • Explore the process/action to be taken in relation to disclosures and reporting allegations of abuse. Including accountability and their individual and the organisational responsibility.

  • Explore and discuss the importance of carrying out the necessary safety checks/risk assessments/safer on professionals working with children. (DBS/safer recruitment/CPD/training).
